A Fourth of July celebration in Provo Utah ended with six people in the hospital after malfunctioning fireworks veered into the stands of a crowded football stadium.
The accident occurred in the opening ceremony of the annual Freedom Festival hosted at Brigham Young University. According to the event spokesperson, Emory Cook, there were around 45,000 individuals in attendance at the Fourth of July celebration.
When the fireworks were set off in the opening ceremony, several individual fireworks veered off from the bunch that was sent off into the sky and landed in the stands among the attendees. According to Cook, event organizers paused the show for 15 minutes to allow the injured audience members to receive medical attention.
Six people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries, it is unknown the severity of the other injuries or the total number of people who were struck by fireworks.
Authorities are looking into the cause of the accident.
Fourth Of July is One of The Most Dangerous Days of the Year
According to data collected by the Pew Research Center, the Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous days of the year. On average, around 45,000 people go to emergency rooms for treatment of injuries on July fourth and fifth, totaling nearly 91,000 ER visits for both days.
Unsurprisingly, the most common cause for the spike in injury-related ER visits on the fourth and fifth is fireworks. Nearly half of all firework-related injuries for the year take place within the first eight days of July.
The data collected revealed the most common types of firework-related injuries were heat burns, bruises and abrasions, and cuts. Typically, the majority of firework-related injuries are less serious, however, some injuries do result in patients being admitted or receiving treatment and being transferred to another hospital.
