Invokana is an SGLT2 inhibitor that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2013 to treat adults with type 2 diabetes.   2. Diabetic ketoacidosis: You could develop diabetic ketoacidosis while taking Invokana. This potentially life-threatening condition occurs when your body does not produce enough insulin. As a result, the body breaks down fat for energy, which releases toxic ketones. You could develop kidney failure or fall into a coma from diabetic ketoacidosis.
  3. Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Invokana is linked to urinary tract infections. While UTIs may cause pain and discomfort, they could also spread into the bloodstream or to the kidneys. Therefore, UTIs that were initially caused by Invokana could become fatal.
  4. Blood clots: Blood clots may develop after taking Invokana. These blood clots could travel to vital organs, such as the heart or brain.
  5. Kidney injury or failure: The FDA received more than 100 reports of acute kidney injuries caused by Invokana complications between mid-2013 and late-2015.
  6. Acute pancreatitis: There are reports that Invokana may cause acute pancreatitis, a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed.
