Four people, including three U.S. Marines were killed in a dangerous one-vehicle crash on June 24 on the 5 Freeway in Downey.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call at about 2:30 AM regarding a crash. An investigation of the crash found that a 2018 Dodge Charger was headed southbound on the 5 Freeway when the driver lost control of the car. The car struck a metal guardrail and the concrete pillar of a pedestrian bridge. The force of the impact caused the car to catastrophically split in half, ejecting two passengers from the back of the vehicle onto the right shoulder.
According to authorities, the front of the vehicle became completely engulfed in flames and was still on fire when officers arrived; all four individuals were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are unaware if the force of impact or the fire was the cause of death for the people in the front of the vehicle.
Three of the victims were identified by the Los Angeles Coroner as 27-year-old Joshua Leandra Moore Jr., 26-year-old Daniel Nichols, and 21-year-old Rodrigo Zermeno Gomez. The fourth victim remains unidentified. Currently, the coroner’s office has not stated whether the identified victims were Marines. However, military officials have confirmed that three of the victims were U.S. Marines, reportedly stationed at Camp Pendleton.
“It’s an incredibly devastating incident and ordeal that these victims suffered through before their untimely passing,” said Paul Starita, personal injury attorney at Singleton Schreiber. “My thoughts and prayers are with their families following this dangerous and catastrophic collision.”

Fatal Downey Car Accidents
Downey, a bustling city located in Los Angeles County, has sadly witnessed its fair share of fatal car accidents over the years. These tragic incidents serve as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from negligent driving, road hazards, or unforeseen circumstances.
There are several factors that contribute greatly to the loss of lives on the roadways, such as:
- Impaired Driving: Impaired driving has been a contributing factor in numerous fatal accidents in Downey. Incidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications have had devastating consequences for both the responsible drivers and innocent victims. Law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups in Downey have continuously worked to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel.
- Distracted Driving: Distracted driving has become an alarming issue across the country, and Downey is not immune to its impact. Fatal accidents caused by drivers who are distracted by their smartphones, electronic devices, or other activities have taken lives and shattered families in the city. Educational campaigns, stricter laws, and technological advancements in automobile safety systems are being employed to combat this growing problem.
- Road Conditions and Infrastructure Challenges: Road conditions and infrastructure play a significant role in ensuring safe transportation. In some instances, poor road design, inadequate signage, or maintenance issues have contributed to fatal accidents in Downey. The city authorities are actively working to identify areas of concern and implement necessary improvements to enhance road safety and prevent future tragedies.
To address the persistent issue of fatal car accidents, Downey has implemented comprehensive traffic safety education programs. These initiatives aim to educate drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists about safe practices, traffic laws, and the importance of sharing the road responsibly. Concurrently, law enforcement agencies have increased their efforts to enforce traffic regulations and penalize those who disregard them.
The legal complexities surrounding a fatal car accident can be difficult to understand and require careful examination from an experienced legal attorney. Unfortunately, the aftermath of such accidents involves a multitude of legal considerations, including determining liability, insurance coverage, criminal charges, and potential civil lawsuits. It is essential for victims and their families to seek legal counsel to navigate these complexities and ensure their rights are protected. While legal proceedings can be challenging and emotionally taxing, they provide an avenue for justice and compensation in the face of unimaginable loss.
“My hope is that the families of the victims involved in this fatal accident seek out the assistance of a knowledgeable attorney that can help them receive the guidance needed in a complicated matter such as this collision,” added Mr. Starita. “The families deserve to grieve in peace knowing that the legal matters surrounding the crash are being taken care of.”
