Car Accidents in Albuquerque
Albuquerque is a high-risk city for driving, as many collisions occur on the roads. No other city in New Mexico sees more car accidents than Albuquerque.
The New Mexico annual crash report for 2021 found that the city of Albuquerque saw nearly 14,000 car accidents in a year. Bernalillo County, which includes Albuquerque and the surrounding areas saw nearly 16,000 accidents.
What factors contribute to car accidents occurring in Albuquerque?
- Speeding – driving above the speed limit greatly reduces the driver’s reaction time to respond to changing conditions appropriately and increases the likelihood of more serious injuries or death
- Inexperienced Drivers – new drivers who lack experience on the road may be more likely to make poor decisions and have slower reactions. They may not be able to handle high-pressure situations well such as emergencies, navigating heavy traffic, and more.
- Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol – driving under the influence severely impairs the driver’s judgment, reaction time, and coordination, which can cause dangerous situations that are more likely to result in serious accidents, injuries, and even death.
- Driver Inattention – when drivers engage in distracted driving behaviors like texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting the radio, they divert their attention from the road which can cause collisions.
- Aggressive Driving – aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, and road rage can create dangerous conditions on the road. Aggressive drivers are more likely to take unnecessary risks and thus increase the chances of causing accidents on the road.
