ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital after a collision between two pickup trucks in North County Tuesday morning.

One Dead, One Injured in Rollover Crash Near EscondidoCalifornia Highway Patrol said in a statement that a Chevrolet Silverado and a Ford F-150 were both driving northbound on Interstate 15 around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday when they collided south of Deer Springs Road, near Escondido.

The Ford spun out and stopped in the center divider, while the Chevrolet veered to the right and rolled over several times before ending up on the right shoulder of the road.

The Chevrolet driver, a 19-year-old man from Murrieta, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while a passenger, also 19, was taken to a nearby hospital with what CHP described as major injuries. The driver of the Ford, 24, was not injured.

“My heart goes out to the family of the young man who was killed in this crash,” said Gerald Singleton, the managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “To lose a loved one so young is a heartbreak that no one should ever have to know.

“I also hope that treatment goes well for the young woman who is in the hospital, and that she is able to recover completely and quickly.”

Rollovers are a common occurrence in fatal crashes.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2021, there were roughly 4,000 fatal car crashes in California. In just over 1 out of 5 fatal crashes — 859 in total — at least one vehicle rolled over, with 655 of those rollovers brought on by a collision with a vehicle or other object.

That rate is consistent with the nationwide rate of 22.2% of fatal crashes involving rollovers, per the NHTSA data.

Police have not released any further investigation results, including whether other factors like speeding, alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the crash.

“It’s crucial that police are able to get to the bottom of what happened here,” Singleton said. “That information helps clarify what legal options families might have available to them after a crash like this.

“Personal injury attorneys can help victims of car accidents sift through the uncertainty to make sure that they are receiving the compensation they deserve for expenses like medical bills, lost wages, or — should the worst happen — funeral costs”
