FRESNO, Calif. — A driver was hospitalized with major injuries after a collision that involved multiple semi trucks just over a week ago.
California Highway Patrol officers said they were called to a crash in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 just north of Highway 41 in Fresno shortly before 4:15 p.m. May 15.
Police determined that a Ford F-250 utility was stopped behind one semi due to heavy traffic in the area when another semi, which failed to stop for traffic, struck the Ford from behind, pushing it into the other semi.
The driver of the Ford, which was crushed between the two semis, was pinned in place and had to be extricated by rescue crews in order to be transferred to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
CHP has not released further information about the crash, including the identity of the Ford driver or whether any other factors contributed to the collision.
“Our thoughts are with the driver who was injured in this crash and his family,” said Brett Schreiber, an attorney at Singleton Schreiber. “An accident like that exerts a terrible toll, both physically and mentally, and I hope that his treatment is successful.”
Crashes involving large trucks are getting more common.
More than 120,000 large trucks were involved in crashes that resulted in injury or death in 2022, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with more than 60% of truck crashes happening during daytime hours.
The rate of fatal crashes per 100 million truck miles has increased 37% over the past decade, while the rate of crashes causing injury per 100 million miles is up approximately 6% since 2016 (the government changed its sampling process in 2016, so comparisons to earlier years are less accurate).
“When large trucks are involved in crashes, the aftermath can be very complex,” Brett Schreiber said. “A personal injury attorney can help you pursue legal options to make sure that you are compensated for unexpected expenses like medical bills or lost wages, so you can focus on recovering and getting back to your life.”
