On Friday, August 30, 2024, a collision occurred between a semi-truck, a Chrysler, and a third vehicle. The collision led to the death of one woman, who has been identified as 31-year-old Brittany Robbins.
According to California Highway Patrol investigators, a man driving a Chrysler heading west on Avenue 12, stopped to make a left turn onto Riverstone Boulevard. The semi-truck behind him failed to stop and rear-ended the Chrysler.
The impact caused the semi to enter into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with Robbins’ vehicle, causing her death.
The man in the Chrysler was injured in the rear-end collision. The semi-truck driver was not injured.
Authorities have stated that neither alcohol nor drugs played a part in the crash.
What Causes Accidents Between Semi-Trucks and Smaller Vehicles?
Collisions between semi-trucks and smaller vehicles can occur for several reasons and often result in devastating consequences. Some of the most common causes include:
- Brake failure and other mechanical issues: semi-trucks are large, heavy vehicles that require well-maintained brakes and mechanical systems to operate safely. A failure in any of these systems, such as worn-out brake pads, or malfunctioning components, can lead to a rear-end collision like the one described above.
- Driver fatigue: truck drivers often work long hours, and when they become fatigued it can impair their ability to quickly react to traffic changes. If a truck driver is drowsy or fatigued, they might not notice a vehicle stopping in front of them until it’s too late to avoid colliding with them.
- Distracted driving: driving distracted is a significant factor in many accidents that involve semi-trucks. Whether the driver is eating, texting, or adjusting their GPS, a momentary distraction can result in a catastrophic accident.
- Speeding or following too closely: due to their significant size and weight, semi-trucks require more distance to come to a complete stop. If a truck driver is speeding or following too closely behind another vehicle, they may not have enough time to stop safely, causing them to rear-end the vehicle in front of them.
- Poor road conditions or weather: adverse weather conditions, such as rain or fog, can reduce visibility and road traction, making it more difficult for truck drivers to control their vehicles. Slippery roads or reduced visibility can increase the likelihood of accidents, especially if the truck is not being driven with extra precaution.
“The loss of Brittany Robbins, and the injury of the other driver, in this tragic accident is a profound reminder of the dangers posed by collisions between semi-trucks and smaller vehicles,” says Brett Schreiber, attorney of Singleton Schreiber, “The sheer size and weight of these trucks can lead to devastating outcomes, as we’ve sadly seen in this case. As investigators continue to uncover the facts, it is essential that every responsible party is held accountable, not only to seek justice for Brittany and her loved ones but also to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.”
If you’ve lost a loved one in an accident with a semi-truck or have been injured, you may have legal recourse. Legal options may include pursuing a personal injury claim or a wrongful death claim against the responsible party. Potentially responsible parties may include:
- The truck driver
- The trucking company
- The truck manufacturer or parts supplier
- Maintenance contractors
- Government entities
- And more
