One student was killed, and 23 other children were hurt on their first day of elementary school when a school bus overturned in Ohio’s Clark County on August 22.
The bus had no seatbelts according to Ohio State Highway Patrol officials. Fifty-two students were on the bus at the time of the incident. According to Northwestern Local Schools, Clark County’s school district, the accident involved an elementary school route.
A Honda Odyssey heading east at about 8:16 AM veered left off center and into the lane of the school bus which was traveling westbound. In an attempt to avoid the Honda, the school bus operator tried to drive onto the shoulder, but the vehicles still collided. The bus then overturned when it went off the right side of the road. The Honda went off the right side of the road and came to a rest.
One student suffered serious injuries, and twenty-two students suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to officers. The bus driver and Honda driver, as well as their passenger, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
